Mixed media and acrylic paint on paper on canvas 3 x 20x29cm

(frameweb.com)Dario Moschetta says his practice results in the creation of “mixed media” works. Yet his technique is more complex than what “mixed media” might imply. Using a detailed photographic base printed on paper, he proceeds to dissolve the printed pigment by applying vinyl glue directly on the surface. He then tears away the first layer of paper to leave behind a spectre of an image, thereafter spraying the painting with water and scratching the surface with sandpaper and chisels to expose the pulp below. This process is repeated until he is satisfied with the result, and goes on to add colour to his work.
Moschetta is inspired by film posters and cinematic icons, including Pier Paolo Pasolini. While he is known mainly for his cityscapes, he has also done an outstanding series of portraits that resembles old, worn posters that have faded over time. Interested in the effect of time over both physical and mental images, Moschetta’s work is charmingly, masterfully uneven and nostalgic.

Acrylic on scratched double paper...What is it?

With the sentence “Acrylic on scratched double paper” I mean this: I use a photographic base printed on paper to obtain as more details as possible, because if I drew everything (and I could) much of the charm of the city would be lost. I proceed to dissolve the printing pigment with vinylic glue applyied directly on the image (this happens when I glue the image facedown on canvas or paper). Then I tear away the first layer of paper, leaving a kind of “ghostly” image. At this point I spray the painting with water and I scratch the surface with sandpaper and chisels to show the raw paper below. This process can be repeated without any rule, spraying and scratching randomly, again and again, until I’m satisfied with the result. Then comes the fun part for me as I choose and lay down the color, deciding what part of the image will come out more, underlying dynamic lines to give visual strenght to the painting: the streets, the light that is reflected in the sky, and also the perspective lines of the buildings. What emerges is interesting to see as I try to capture the style of a city, its essence.

TALKING ART WITH DARIO MOSCHETTA

Let our readers know who you are, where you are from and what kind of art you create?

My name is Dario Moschetta and I am an artist of Castelfranco Veneto, a small town near Treviso, Italy. I was born here and worked the Renaissance painter Giorgione. My job is to make paintings in acrylic, I’ve been experimenting with various techniques developed by me, one of them is to apply several layers of paper and tear it in a controlled manner, so as to obtain a surface irregular, such as posters of movies that you can see in the street. those are the big city skyline in general. I also do portraits and nudes, even of large size, such as “mick Jagger” recently.

What is your favourite piece of art that you have done?

I am very satisfied to all of my artwork, the last one I did (Mick Jagger) seems very interesting, in both size and color and texture type. I like the cityscapes due to the surface than from a sense of vintage.

Show & Tell us about your workspace and the tools you use. (brushes, charcoal, steel, lasers?)

Use canvas roll, I need a big white surface, when the work is finished I choose the right size. so I feel free to work. I like acrylics because it gives me execution speed, and can be corrected at any time. Brushes of medium size. I also use spatulas, knives, sandpaper, spray water, and step on the surface rags and more. Everything is instinctive, without a precise logic, when something goes well, do not touch it anymore.
Dario Moschetta

What are you working on right now?

Right now I’m working on another large portrait (150x170centimeters), the portrait of Pierpaolo Pasolini, a great Italian writer and director, for my solo exhibition in Empoli, which will be in March to April, together with the “mick jagger” (150x210centimeters) and other paintings. when it is ready I will send you a file, a matter of days.
Pierpaolo Pasolini

What is your favourite piece of art from another artist?

There are many artists that I like, I can say here Fracis Bacon, Lucian Freud. further into the past, Modigliani, Picasso, but also the impressionists, italian futurists. if I had to pick one right now … a Bacon self-portrait.
We would like to thank Dario Moschetta for taking part in our quick artist interview. You can check out his work at:
